The story of the woman at the well is one of the most well known in the Bible; many Christians can easily tell a summary of it. On its surface, the story chronicles ethnic prejudice and a woman shunned by her community. But take look deeper, and you'll realize it reveals a great deal about Jesus' character.

He avoided meeting the Pharisees, not through fear, but to avoid the inevitable controversy and criticism. Jesus could have avoided travelling through Samaria, as many Jews would do, since there was hostility between Jews and Samaritans. It is here that Jesus speaks of living water. In terms of timing, John elsewhere uses Roman, not Jewish time, which would set this meeting at 6.

When I first began my journey as a Christian towards egalitarianism, I expected to come across an insurmountable scriptural roadblock. I expected to find a Bible verse that clearly states God really only wants men to be the leaders in the church. But for many, 1 Timothy is it. It is the sticking point that stops them from seeing other verses that show that women did minister and lead in Bible times, and that women can minister in whatever capacity God has called and gifted and equipped them for. The author of these notes is Ray Van Neste. Rays comments are given in bold and in quotation marks. This word is consistently used in the Greek New Testament in the context of giving, or asking for, permission by making an exception or a temporary allowance limited in scope. It is also used in the context of withholding permission in a specific and limited situation. You can check this for yourself. He does not simply offer an opinion.

Question: "What can we learn from the woman at the well? This was an extraordinary woman. She was a Samaritan , a race of people that the Jews utterly despised as having no claim on their God, and she was an outcast and looked down upon by her own people. However, this woman was ostracized and marked as immoral, an unmarried woman living openly with the sixth in a series of men. The story of the woman at the well teaches us that God loves us in spite of our bankrupt lives.

One of the greatest Christian minds in history was a 17 th century thinker named Blaise Pascal. About 2, years earlier, King Solomon echoed the same concept in Ecc. In other words, though His image in us is marred by sin, ultimately within every human soul we have an awareness that there is something more than what this world offers. And as a result, when we are separated from God our sin-sick, rebellious hearts are constantly, even desperately running after things to fill the place reserved in our hearts exclusively for our Creator. We can all testify to it.

Sermon Series

What does the Bible say about? Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples , he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria.
